Hi, my name is Ellie and I am an illustrator who focuses on surface pattern design from Castleford, UK. My patterns are mostly based on nature - plants, flowers, and animals - and the idea that no matter where you live you can bring a little joy from nature into your life. I use watercolours and printmaking techniques such as monoprinting and lino in my work for the colours, textures, and the hand-crafted element they bring.

I am also a frequent landscape painter - I love being able to capture the beauty of a landscape, whether it's the natural beauty or the small hidden details of a place people often miss.

Competition - Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year Wildcard (aired 4th Feb 2026)

On June 19th 2025 I was invited to take part as a Wildcard on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year! â€‹

This was an absolutely amazing experience to take part in, meeting and chatting to lots of lovely artists throughout the day, and painting a stunning view for the day. I was a little bit nervous but the film team, judges and other artists were so cheerful and encouraging, it was great talking to them all.

It was such a surreal experience being on a filming set with all of the cameras around but with such an amazing view to paint of the fells in Keswick I very quickly found my happy place in painting. One of the many, many highlights of the day was having the chance to do an interview on camera with judge Kathleen Soriano, and although it didn't make it into the final cut, just the chance to talk to her about my process, how I start painting and how far I have come in my work was an absolute privilege and a moment I will never forget!

My piece was made using biro and watercolour, and I decided to do a long, tall strip to try and get a sense of the height and presence of the fells. It was a challenge with all of the greens and the very clear blue sky but I think I managed to capture the different shades. To see a close up version of the piece and the pieces I submitted in my entry application, please go to my Landscape page

And just to say a big thanks to my mum for supporting me throughout the day, especially for holding an umbrella over both our heads in the +30°C degree heat all day, and my dad for encouraging me to enter in the first place. I am so glad I did!

Achievement - Uppercase Issue 63 'Sensuous Stationery'

I have been published in issue 63 of Uppercase (October-December 2024)!

"These stationery boxes, including notebooks and greetings cards, are one-off pieces I made for my final university project, but would love to see them as actual products in stationery shops and garden centres. I made these designs with my Dad in mind; his love for gardening and brightly coloured plants has often been a source of inspiration in my work. I think these are sensory because of the handmade nature of the processes I used to craft the original images - monoprinting, lino printing and watercolour painting - as well as the textures and detail these processes create."
